In the lead up to International Women’s Day 2018, Runaway began the #GirlsBehindTheGames campaign.
47% of gamers are women and yet women only make up 22% of the game industry itself. Runaway wanted to help improve those numbers by increasing awareness of women in the industry and highlighting the incredible work they do.
Thanks to Bioware, Bossa Studios, Capcom, Dinosaur Polo Club, EA UK, Google, Greater than Games, Henchman and Goon, Nyamyam, Snowman and UsTwo Games for hosting such informative and inspiring Twitter takeovers, highlighting personal accounts of women in the industry.
We have had over 5 million tweet impressions through #GirlsBehindTheGames. This was thanks to hundreds of women sharing their experiences and talents with the world.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for sharing your stories!
The Future
-
We hope to build a a free PDF handbook, made from all the tweets and stories you shared through #girlsbehindthegames. We would love some help collating this - so if you have any design skills and would like to work with us on it, please get in touch! Email us!
-
When this handbook is ready, please share this with schools, universities, workplaces, anyone you know that will encourage diversity in the games industry.
-
Most importantly, keep the conversation going on Twitter with #GirlsBehindTheGames. Highlight achievements of women in the gaming industry, share your projects, when you succeed, when you fail, when you make a co-worker laugh. Anything.
Have you heard gaming conference organisers say it’s hard for them to find a diverse range of speakers? We have.
Runaway wants to help remove this as a barrier to diversity!
